Zagreb, 4 May 2016 - PLIVA CROATIA donated two mobile spirometers for diagnostics and prevention of lung diseases worth HRK 41.000, officially marking World Asthma Day and the end of health campaign I Love Waling. Spirometers have been donated to the Croatian Thoracic Society and the Croatian Respiratory Society to help health professional take care of patients.
I Love Walking public health campaign has been organised for fifth year in a row in four largest Croatian cities, with the aim of promoting healthy lifestyle, and this time with special emphasis on raising awareness about chronic diseases of the respiratory system, especially asthma and COPD. In 2015 alone more than 12000 citizens took part in the campaign and raised the amount of the donation, as for every walked kilometre PLIVA donated 1 kuna for the purchase of spirometers.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death in the world, following cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. In Europe COPD affects between 4 and 10% of the total adult population, and the number of patients is on the rise. Nearly 70% of patients have no diagnosis, and for successful treatment timely diagnosis and adherence to prescribed therapy is crucial. Unlike COPD, asthma usually occurs at a younger age, and half of the patients are diagnosed until by the age of ten. It is estimated that asthma affects more than 300 million people in the world, and in recent years the number of patients has been on the rise. This disease cannot be completely cured, but timely diagnosis and proper treatment can keep under control.
Mihael Furjan, President of the Board of PLIVA, handed the donation to the Croatian Thoracic Society and the Croatian Respiratory Society.
„I am very pleased that we have been a partner of the Croatian healthcare system for 95 years, and that we have an opportunity to help the community in which we operate and achieve successful results. It gives us great pride to be able to contribute to improving the health of our patients, and to facilitate the process of setting the diagnosis. As a company we are more than aware of our social responsibility and it is our wish to continue investing in the development of health system in order to improve the conditions and quality of treatment of our citizens”, Furjan said.
“We would like to thank PLIVA for recognizing our need to purchase spirometers, which will be of great help in our daily work with patients. It is a donation of exceptional importance. These diagnostic devices will facilitate timely diagnosis of chronic respiratory diseases that seriously affect the quality of life, help treatment of patients, and enable better health and a quality of life”, said Professor Miroslav Samaržija, President of the Croatian Thoracic Society.
