“Together Against Lung Disease” public health campaign
We are inviting you to take part in our “Together Against Lung Disease” public health campaign to be held on Friday and Saturday, 6 and 7 May in the Special Hospital for Lung Diseases in Rockefellerova 3.
The campaign is organised by Special Hospital for Lung Diseases, Croatian Patient Safety Society, Croatian Society of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, with the support of PLIVA Croatia. The goal is to motivate citizens to be more proactive in talking care of their health.
The doors of the Special Hospital for Lung Diseases in Rockefellerova 3 will be open for all citizens who will have an opportunity to do a spirometry or allergy skin tests on Friday, 6 may between 4pm and 7pm. On Saturday 7 May between 9am and noon visitors will again have a chance to do spirometry and talk to specialists.
Preventive check-ups are crucial for early diagnosis and successful treatment of lung diseases, especially asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). By taking part in this campaign you will become a part of a joint care for health.
Asthma is a chronic lung disease causing inflammation and narrowing of airways. In Europe 30 million children and adults under the age of 45 live with asthma, and 6 of them suffer from severe symptoms. Total asthma related costs in Europe amount to EUR 17.7 billion a year, and it is estimated that the loss of productivity due to poor disease control by patients is estimated at EUR 9.8 billion a year.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a set of conditions including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. It is a progressive disease affecting between 4 and 10% of adult population in Europe, currently ranked sixth cause of death according to the WHO. It is estimated that in 2020 it will move up to the third position. COPD is responsible for nearly one half of the total financial burden relate to lung diseases in Europe, amounting to EUR 141.4 billion. It is the cause of the greatest number of days spent outside work compared to other diseases, and it is estimated that every year EUR 32.8 billion is lost as a result of diminished productivity of patients suffering from COPD.
