WALKING TO HEALTH 2015
WALKING TO HEALTH is a fund raising and public health event organized for already the fifth time by PLIVA CROATIA with an eye to promote healthy lifestyles and encourage people to take part in regular physical activities. Walking is a simple physical activity available to almost anyone and not requiring any expensive equipment. A 30-minute daily walk brings about a number of health benefits. This year’s event has been dedicated to raising the awareness about respiratory diseases, in particular asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Walking to Health events will be organized in four towns, i.e. Rijeka, Split, Osijek and Zagreb, in June. The routes are around 2 kilometres long, which is the average distance walked over a period of 30 minutes. PLIVA will donate funds for each kilometre of walking in these four towns (Osijek, Rijeka, Split, Zagreb), and these funds will be used for the purchase of the spirometer for patient education. Everybody can also join this fund raising event via social media, i.e. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
The event was held in the centre of Split, on 7 June, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it attracted a large number of its citizens who walked the entire route, even several times, despite hot weather.
Although walking is an exceptionally efficient and healthy physical activity, its importance has not been recognized and it may be one of the most “underestimated” physical activities as preference is given to various commercial and aggressively advertised activities such as fitness, wellness, etc. One of the benefits of walking is that, unlike other physical activities, it requires lower intensity and less time for the body to start healing.
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways, which results from the deregulated interaction of inflammatory cells and tissue forming cells. Asthma is a chronic disease usually requiring long-term treatment, which for many patients means daily use of some basic medicines.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a pulmonary damage where normal air flow to the lungs is reduced, which makes breathing difficult. COPD is one of the diseases with recently the fastest growing incidence; over the last half a century, its incidence has increased by as much as 163%. As far as morbidity and mortality are concerned, COPD ranks fourth (after infarction, malignant diseases and stroke), and it is expected to rank third in 2020. Between 10 and 20% of adult population above 40 years of age suffer from COPD.
Almost 70% of patients are not diagnosed, and timely diagnosis is essential for treatment and compliance with prescribe therapies.
The objective of this event is to make everybody embrace walking as a healthy physical activity and improve their overall health by regular 30-minute walks.
Walk instead of taking the car or bus…. Enjoy walking, improve your health and contribute to the WALKING TO HEALTH event.
