PLIVA Donated KM 50,000 to Help Repair Cantonal Hospital in Bihać
PLIVA donated KM 50,000 (HRK 200,000) to help repair the roof of the Cantonal Hospital "Dr. Irfan Ljubijankić" in Bihać heavily damaged in fire in late July 2013. Ivan Gregov, a new Director of PLIVA’s Branch Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina, presented this valuable donation to Hajrudin Havić, MD, Hospital Manager, on Wednesday, 18 December 2013.
The Cantonal Hospital "Dr. Irfan Ljubijankić", Bihać, is a healthcare institution with more than 90 years of tradition. Its beginnings date back to as early as 1920. Today, it is the leading healthcare institution in the Una-Sana Canton and a secondary and partly tertiary healthcare provider for about 300,000 citizens. Geographically, it is the most distant healthcare institution, i.e. it is situated more than 400 km away from major medical centres in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The hospital occupies over 84,000 square meters, and consists of several buildings with hospital departments; it employs more than 800 people. The central building (roof and attic), which houses operating rooms and Intensive Care, Urology, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Neonatology, Microbiology and Biochemical lab, was damaged in the fire. The working area and most pieces of equipment were either completely destroyed or significantly damaged, and the Cantonal Hospital currently uses 5,300 out of 22,480 m2 of its working space, and only 200 out of 680 beds.
"Fortunately, and most importantly, there were no fatalities. We appreciate the efforts and dedication of firemen and other emergency services that helped successfully evacuate patients and hospital staff and thus prevented an even bigger tragedy. Material damages are, however, considerable and PLIVA, as a socially responsible company, would again like to help those who need it most. We hope that our donation will speed up the reconstruction of the roof and enable both the hospital staff and patients to return, as soon as possible, to the central building which houses the vital parts of the hospital”, said Ivan Gregov, Director of PLIVA’s Branch Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also expressed his hope that PLIVA’s donation would both speed up the refurbishment of the hospital and encourage other companies and institutions to participate in its reconstruction.
"PLIVA’s donation means a lot to us, especially if we take into account that the funds raised so far are still not sufficient for the reconstruction of the hospital which has sustained damages amounting to several millions due to the fire. The CantonalHospital is a strategic healthcare institution, and around 300,000 citizens from the region and beyond gravitate towards this hospital”, said Hajrudin Havić, MD, Hospital Manager, thanking PLIVA for its donation.
